Brazilian mills are expected to crush 691.4 million tonnes of sugarcane in 2018, according to the most recent estimate by the country's national Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) released this week, reports Anna Flavia Rochas for Sugaronline.

The most recent estimate is 1.7 lower than IBGE's previous forecast released in May, but 0.5% higher than total production last year.

Total planted area of sugarcane in the country should be 1.7% greater than in 2017, and the area to be harvested is expected to increase 1.3% this year. IBGE estimates that productivity will reduce by 0.8%.
