EU and French sugar exports have tripled year on year, after the 2017 abolition of the EU sugar production quotas, as reported by French news agency Cultivar, according to Platts.
French sugar production hit a record of 6.1 million tonnes, a 47% increase over the 4.1 million tonnes produced during the 2016-17 season. EU production also increased on the year, reaching 20.7 million tonnes, a 27% increase over 16.3 million tonnes during the 2016/17 season.
French exports to other EU countries have increased over 60% over the past year, to 4.8 million tonnes from 2.99 million tonnes last year. French exports to non-EU nations more than tripled, rising from 0.15 million tonnes during the first half of 2017 to 530,000 tonnes to date. However, lower prices have limited the increase in monetary value of these exports.
EU exports rose to 1.85 million tonnes from 500,000 tonnes in the first half of 2017, an increase of over 270%.
