PARAGUAY: Organic sugar exports total US$5.2 million in Jan-April

Paraguay exported US$5.2 million in organic sugar during the first four months of 2018, equivalent to 6,843 tonnes, data from the Ministry of Industry and Trade shows, according to Paraguay's La Nación news website.

Exports have decreased recently mainly due to climatic conditions affecting production. In the first four months of 2018, Paraguay registered a drop of 74% in organic sugar shipments, in relation to the same period in 2017, when exports reached 26,552 tonnes, equivalent to US$18.7 million in revenues.

Conrado Hoeckle, president of sugar industry association Centro Azucarero, said that the Paraguayan organic sugar meets the best quality standards globally, and demand for the product in the local domestic market is also high. 

Paraguay exports organic sugar mainly to the United States, Sweden, France, Germany, Switzerland and Netherlands. Other export markets are Belgium, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, Italy, Tunisia, among other countries in the Americas and in the European Union.

Hoeckle said the sector is interested in opening new markets for the product, but the priority is to achieve higher levels of production.
